Getting Involved in the Refugee Crisis

The global refugee crisis is challenging the systems in place to welcome and integrate individuals and families, and there are obstacles at every level – from international policymakers to local businesses and communities. We can do our part to ensure that refugees are welcomed as they build new lives, and help design policies that are fair to them and the communities in which they will live.

Over the past century, UNHCR has worked to address many major refugee crises. These began with the mass displaced persons (DPs) from the Second World War in Europe and the Soviet Union, followed by decolonization that created numerous refugee problems in Africa and Asia. Then came the growing numbers displaced by natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes and hurricanes, as well as climate change-induced droughts and wildfires. While most of this displacement is internal, it can trigger secondary migration and can be forced across international borders by violence or human rights abuses.

Displacement-related issues are often entwined with larger civil conflict, and the needs of the affected population exacerbate concerns about regional destabilization. This creates opportunities for scapegoating and manipulation, and can make temporarily displaced situations seem permanent.

The answer to this challenge begins at the local level, and involves the entire community. There are many ways to get involved: Vote for politicians who support refugee solutions; share information about refugee issues with family, friends and coworkers; volunteer at a local organization that supports refugees; and challenge myths and prejudices when you hear them expressed in discussions.
