World news (or international news or foreign coverage) is a subfield of journalism that deals with information about events or issues that occur in countries other than one’s own. It is also the name of a newspaper, magazine or television station that focuses on such stories. In the case of newspapers, the term may also refer to an aggregation of such articles from various sources or to “news agencies.” When reporters working abroad have no permanent contract with any media outlet, they are known as stringers. Historically, the bulk of major news agency services contained foreign news. This was before the advent of telecommunication technologies that made it easier to disseminate news widely.
A notable example of such an article is a war story, though even this may be considered a specialization of world news in the case of belligerent nations.
